Description
Henry Rosovsky reminds us that research is the expression of faith in the possibility of progress. The drive that leads scholars to study a topic has to include the belief that new things can be discovered, that newer can be better, and that greater depth of understanding is achievable. Research, especially academic research, is a form of optimism about the human condition.
In these study units we follow this attitude of optimism by encouraging students to look forward to their research projects because they have mastered the principles and are not hesitant to embark on this journey of discovery

SU 23.1 Introduction to research
When we think about research, students probably think about a heavy work load and difficult academic challenge, I know I did.
But it is helpful to think, not about a load, but about a journey of discovery where the destination is your graduation.
Any journey begins with the first step and your firsts step is by watching this presentation to acquaint yourself with the topic.
In this study unit we cover the following topics:

- What is the purpose of writing a dissertation?
- Why is the dissertation research based?
- What is the role of the supervisor?
- What is the meaning of and philosophy behind research activities?
- What are the elements of research?
- What are the various types of research?
- What is the structure, language and technicalities of a dissertation?
- What is the purpose of methodology used in research?
- What are the competencies ( as level descriptors) displayed by writing a dissertation?
SU 23.2 Applied research
In this study unit we will focus on the practical implementation of the research guidelines, methods and theories. The aim is to help the student in being able to write a good script. Aspects that will be covered include:
- Getting started with the research proposal
- How to come to grips with research terms and terminologies
- How to apply research communication
- How to implement research methodology
- How to use and academic writing style
- To be successful in making use of Internet sources in research
Assignment: Multiple choice questionnaires provide the opportunity for students to gain academic credits for each study unit. Assignments and digitally marked and a certificate awarded for each module successfully completed.
