  • Description

Henry Rosovsky reminds us that research is the expression of faith in the possibility of progress. The drive that leads scholars to study a topic has to include the belief that new things can be discovered, that newer can be better, and that greater depth of understanding is achievable. Research, especially academic research, is a form of optimism about the human condition.

In these study units we follow this attitude of optimism by encouraging students to look forward to their research projects because they have mastered the principles and are not hesitant to embark on this journey of discovery

Here is exactly what we cover in this course:

    SU 23.1 Introduction to research

When we think about research, students probably think about a heavy work load and difficult academic challenge, I know I did.

But it is helpful to think, not about a load, but about a journey of discovery where the destination is your graduation.

Any journey begins with the first step and your firsts step is by watching this presentation to acquaint yourself with the topic.

In this study unit we cover the following topics:

      • What is the purpose of writing a dissertation?
      • Why is the dissertation research based?
      • What is the  role of the supervisor?
      • What is the meaning of and philosophy behind research activities?
      • What are the elements of research?
      • What are the various types of research?
      • What is the structure, language and technicalities  of a dissertation?
      • What is the purpose of methodology used in research?
      • What are the competencies ( as level descriptors) displayed by writing a dissertation?

    SU 23.2 Applied research

In this study unit we will focus on the practical implementation of the research guidelines, methods  and theories. The aim is to help the student in being able to write a good script. Aspects that will be covered include:

    • Getting started with the research proposal
    • How to come to grips with research terms and  terminologies
    • How to apply research communication
    • How to implement research methodology
