Here is exactly what we cover in this course:
Serviceability refers to the attitude and adequacy of the counsellor to render service and this is probably the greatest asset of the counsellor. The content also covers deeper existential aspects of counselling and how it relates to service rendering. The last section provides an illustration of wellness practice by making use of the metaphor of the wellness tree.
In study unit 50.2 the programme covers client rights, jurisprudence and legal aspects of professional ethics, as aligned to scope of practice of the professional body for counsellors, the ASCHP. Counselling is a professional occupation that requires strict ethical and legal compliance. Many unfortunate disciplinary hearings result as a consequence of non-compliance with expected norms and rules. The aim of this study unit is to help the counsellor overcome ignorance and unnecessary professional risks which makes it a MUST for every counsellor.
Counsellors are expected to be able to intelligently and discreetly apply legal stipulations and ethical injunctions in context and not just to mechanically obey set of rules like following a recipe. The purpose and usefulness of jurisprudence is to gain understanding in order to be able to the exercise good judgment, common sense, and caution, especially in the conduct of practical matters.
