Social Work Context - Module 1.1
Wellness counsellors are not social workers, but serve as community counsellors and as such overlap with social work in doing counselling and providing welfare support. Therefore wellness counsellors need to contextualize their counselling in the ambit of social work and work with social workers to support communities.

Description
Counsellors may ask: What is the connection between social work and the work of the wellness counsellor? To see this link clearly, we need to realise that wellness counsellors are peer counsellors who work in community setting of society. As such they often engage with people whose mental and counselling challenges are related to social and welfare issues like poverty, abuse and addiction. In dealing with such people, wellness counsellors are required to be guided by social principles, know the restrictions of the law, stay within their scope of practice and be able to complement the work of registered social workers for referral purposes. Therefore this training programme is contextualized within the broader ambit of social work and consequently we provide an overview of social work aspects in this study unit.
